So funny in spots (“It’s not a dress, it’s a caftan and it keeps my balls at room temp”); so embarrassing in others (all the racial jokes fall flat). Uneven is the best word. But it was worth it just to see the performance of “Rock Me Sexy Jesus.” Amen.

It’s French and fantastic, everyone said. The opening sequence does grab you by the collar. But the story gets convoluted. Here’s what happens – a writer has a great seed of an idea and starts in… only to have it fall apart in act two; derail in act three. Le sob.

Out walking the dawg tonight, I found myself pondering why/how dogs enjoy eating poop so much. How can this be possible? And why doesn’t it make them sick? When Freja was a puppy, she’d eat any kind of shit she came upon, including other dog shit. Yes, she would even eat her own. Puppies live in a state of high excitement, so high that apparently they don’t even realize they’re eating what their bodies just rejected. Maybe puppies are so hungry from all the growing that they figure, “Hey, it tasted good the first time.”

A hilarious update of the “stoner movie.” James Franco steals the show. Sit back, relax, don’t take it so seriously and you may find you’re having a good time. We’re in the throes of a comedy revolution in this country; let’s see where we land. Rosie Perez – hang it up.

This week I found out about HauteLook.com and I was instantly hooked. Basically, it’s a site for sales on designer clothing but they only hold any one sale for 12 to 48 hours and for only one to two designers at a time.

There was fashion to be seen at Square Lake last weekend. Some of it was truly beautiful and inspiring (There were a lot of sun dresses – hooray for sun dresses!) but everyone seemed to struggle with their footwear. I saw:

The Seventh Annual Square Lake Film Festival happened last Saturday outside Stillwater. It’s a one day deal – live music and short film programs alternating all afternoon and into the night. It happens on a farm; don’t ask me how to get there. It was Highway 36 to some road to some other road, etc. etc.

This morning when I woke up to walk the dog I had the distinct impression that I spend most of my time walking the dog. Once a day, like it or not. Most of the time I don’t want to go until I’m out the door and then I get into it. There’s a certain zen madness to it. Walk. Walk. Pick up shit. Walk. Walk. Think. And always, observe.
Today, I noticed a plethora of beer bottles lying on the grassy strip that lies between sidewalk and curb. (Is there a name for this grassy strip?) And not just in one spot or block, either. On my block there was a Colt 45 bottle. On another block a Bass, a Miller Lite and still further afield a Rolling Rock. Add to that a condom wrapper lying in a patch of dirt and I’m wondering what goes on in my neighborhood during the night when all the families with their “SLOW” turtle signs are asleep, their turtles tucked up next to their vinyl sided houses? Do people cruise my neighborhood at low speeds, listening to the radio while knocking back a cold one, keeping one eye open for the cops? Are they partying in the car or are they driving around trying to get over a love affair?

It’s August and I feel dull. Come to think of it, I often feel this way during August. Not much seems to be happening although I’m sure much is happening. Here are the random events.
My cat had to have her toe amputated. We still aren’t sure what caused this as we are waiting for the biopsy to come back. Suddenly her toe was swollen; antibiotics did nothing. By last Sunday night her claw was sticking straight out of a toe-like sausage. On Monday they cut it off. She rests in our closet all day. One morning I crawled in there to check on her and ended up just lying there with her, looking up at all of our clothes. I decided I could understand the need to lie in a closet if feeling raw after an amputation.
